I have read a couple of older posts on the subject, mainly relating to when 4.7 first came out. However as 4.6 seems to have considerably gained in version number since a number of the posts and also 4.7 I thought it was best to check on the current reccomended route before I break the site in trying. :)
The site is running the newest 4.5 version which I think it ended on 4.5.7? and obviously want to upgrade it to 4.7.4. What it the best upgrade route, would it be straight to 4.6.10 and then 4.7.4? Or would it be 4.6.0 to 4.7.4?

4.5 to 4.7 Upgrade
I did several updates from 4.5 to 4.7.4 in the last couple of weeks and found it was easier to go from 4.5 to 4.6 and then to 4.7 - as there are a few modules that do not update properly from 4.5 straight to 4.7. To be safe, I would do the multi-step upgrade.

How about upgrading from a 4.5 Fantastico install?
My host's Fantastico now offers to upgrade me from 4.5 to 4.7.4. I tried this and it blew up pretty good. Can I take the DB from a Fantastico 4.5 site, install 4.6, then upgrade from 4.6 to 4.7.4? I don't care much about staying on Fantastico or not, as long as I can keep the site updated and working.
I know there are threads here about Fantastico, but I can't find anything definitive to help my situation...

Consistency is the best. There is nothing inherently different excpet automation that Fantastico scripts do. So, yes, you can take your current db and files and upgrade them. I would recommend doing so on a test site, then moving the successful results back to your server.
I would also suggest 4.5-4.6-4.7 updating contrib modules each step as well.
