Hi,

I'm looking to setup a web page where community can add "places" like restaurants to a searchable site. You can vote on quality of places. It should have search function by categories (like restaurant & city or cinema & region) and not only full text.

Is that anything Drupal would be support more or less straight forward? Are there modules available?

Any advice is appreciated

Easily done with drupal. You'll want to checkout the cck, views, and fivestar modules. To set up searches by specific fields, you can use the views module with 'exposed filters'.

Yup. Very easy to do with Drupal. Maybe even use the Acquia distribution to save you from having to download the modules. It has everything you need.
