cbrookins commented"701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages are using Drupal" is very misleading in a bad way. MANY more people (that can't be counted) are using Drupal. Isn't the # of people reflective of how many are registered on d.o.? If so how about saying of of the following options:
1. "701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages power Drupal."
2. "701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages form the Drupal community"
3. "Drupal is powered by 701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages."
4. "Our community is made up of 701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages."

lisarex commented+1 The current copy is possibly just placeholder copy; a slight rephrasing would be good.
I like versions 1 & 2 best.

gdemetLet's go with something along the lines of
"X people in Y countries speaking Z languages are part of the Drupal.org community."
While we can measure the size of the community that's represented on drupal.org, I believe that it's important to keep in mind that drupal.org is just one part of the overall community, which is *much* larger in size.

cbrookins commentedRe: #3, since this is drupal.org, saying drupal.org seems unnecessary. how about
"X people in Y countries speaking Z languages power this community."
or if we must say drupal.org (yuck) lets at least be more to the point/briefer:
"X people in Y countries speaking Z languages power drupal.org"

vj_pdx commentedI love the idea of this, with the messages appearing in real time on the map as they appear on d.o. Sweet!

kyle_mathews commentedI disagree with #1. It seems to me the point of saying x number of people use Drupal is merely to say, "a heck of a lot of people are using Drupal", not to provide a precise enumeration of that number which would be, of course, impossible to gather. The suggested revisions make the language more cumbersome for little benefit.

s.daniel commentedI agree with #1
"702,896 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages are using Drupal." is wrong and missleading. Yes the sentence can be interpreted of as "a heck of a lot of people are using Drupal" but can aso result in a question like "only X people?" or "how the heck can they tell?".
#1 = "702,896 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages power this community." or "702,896 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages power the Drupal.org community." sounds good to me.

gdemetI feel strongly that whatever wording we use should not imply that the number of users on drupal.org represents the *entire* Drupal community, just the number of people active on this website. While drupal.org is certainly the hub of this community, the Drupal community is much larger.

ezra-g commented"701,207 people in 230 countries speaking 182 languages power Drupal.org" is clear and highlights the community-driven nature of the project.
If we want to highlight Drupal's popularity outside of drupal.org, perhaps we could say below this text in smaller font, "Millions more use Drupal every day".

lisarex commentedThanks all. I've updated the home page text to say "X people in Y countries speaking Z languages power drupal.org"
I like ezra-g's suggestion of hinting that millions use Drupal too, but that would involve theming etc.

drummI don't think we should add another line of text. To get user of Drupal sites, maybe encourage showcase sites to say what they can about how big their sites are.
I think 'drupal.org' should be simply 'Drupal' or at least capitalized 'Drupal.org'

drummWent ahead and committed '... power Drupal'
