After a search, the RSS icon appears. It points to a URL of the form http://example.com/opensearch/apache_solr/keyword
but when that link is clicked, I get my custom 404 page instead of a feed.

(I'm using the ApacheSolr 1.x version.)

The module has settings to enable the feeds for each module implementing hook_search(); are you sure you enabled the feed for ApacheSolr?
