My Drupal migration experience has had some bumps, but has been very good overall. Drupal is an amazingly flexible, stable CMS.

Now the 'but': I've bummed around the sit elong enough to find the deprecated, no longer supported plugins on CVS and in projects. There are all kinds of goodies in there I'd love to use. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer - so I can't update these.

Modules give Drupal its spice. Although a stable base is important, is there some way to freeze the module API? I can only imagine the frusteration of a module developer having to update their modules every 6 months. And from the other end, I find it frusterating not to be able to use old modules like CafePress or FOAF with 4.4.

I know the project is full of Smart Guys, so I'm sure this isn't a new idea. Are there plans to stabalize theme/module development?

Not really. If we find something that needs improvement, we'll improve it. It is this attitude that makes Drupal so good. If improvement means breaking the API we'll break it, sorry. The last big break has been the theme improvement between 4.3 and 4.4. There will probably be only relatively few API changes between 4.4 and 4.5.

If you really need to use this or that module from old versions try to ask the author to upgrade it or hire somebody to do it for you.
