I'm going to try and explain this without sounding crazy, and make enough sense as well.

On my laptop I have AVG 2011, and my website runs Views Slideshow DDBlock. After logging in, it would take about 5-6 seconds for the DDblock image to show up, and after that, secondary links. What I mean is, the secondary links wouldn't show up until after the first DDblock image showed up. Also, Fancy Login wouldn't work either. So basically, I couldn't go anywhere until that image showed up.

We have a dedicated server, and it just did not seem right that it should be running so slow. Today, I started looking into it a lot, because our site is basically dying from being so slow. I went to the site from different computers and noticed it was working a lot faster. So I reformatted my laptop, and voila, it was running much faster. After installing all my programs, including AVG, the DDblock image problem came back, and the site was going slow again! I want to emphasize: only on my laptop.

So I went to my desktop, which had been going pretty fast earlier, and a lightbulb went off, and I uninstalled my AVG 9, and put on AVG 2011, and what do you know? It's running SLOW.

I know for a fact it's AVG 2011, because it happened on my desktop immediately after I installed it. None of the computers had this version that I tested it on, and they all ran fine. 2 computers I put AVG on, slowed down immensely. And this is only the latest 2011. As I said, my desktop had AVG 9 and was working just fine.

Has anyone heard of this issue before?

*** Also, I couldn't post this message until I just uninstalled AVG from my laptop. I would log into drupal, go to post my message, and I was mysteriously logged out and went to a Access Denied page. *** If anyone wants to verify this, i got the AVG 2011 from download.com

after briefly browsing the AVG forums, there seem to be some issues with the LinkScanner and Surf-Shield, for example here:

http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=112431

they seem to be working on some issues, but just to double check, make sure you report your issue on their forums as well, as people here at Drupal are unlikely to be able to help you out - and please report back!

tdimg,
thanks for the response. it's just funny how this whole time I thought our server was crap, or a module was bugging out, but it was just AVG messing things up.
even Drupal.org is effected, like I said; I just tried to log in on my desktop, which I had tested installing 2011 on, and sure enough, it logs me out randomly whenever I jump to different pages. That's 2 computers, doing the same thing, with 1 program. How strange!

I will definitely report to them, because this seems like a pretty serious issue, considering a lot of people still use AVG. sounds like they are aware of something though, that's good news!

thanks again.

I was about to post an issue in Drupals main issue queue, but then i found this thread, and this certainly isn't an "issue" with Drupal itself.
Regardless, perhaps this is something the Drupal community should talk about and address if possible.

Recently I experienced this issue; in my specific case my Acquia Prosper superfish dropdown menus failed to function in IE 7, 8, and 9. Here's what i discovered and the related issue where I first posted:

After (entirely too much) time spent researching and troubleshooting this myself I realized this problem persisted even with this module completely uninstalled, other modules' updates, theme updates, etc.
I'm now very certain the following is what caused this issue for me:
I realized that a script was being injected into the webpage before the other Drupal scripts, most notably jquery.js itself. I highly suspect this is what caused the problem described above. The script injected was this:

I believe this is related to the surf and/or search shield LinkScanner component of AVG Antivirus 2011.
After testing on a different computer's IE 7,8,and 9 without AVG installed, I can confirm that this module works as expected.
see this link for more related discussion:
http://www.roslindesign.com/blog/2010/10/12/avg-antivirus-2011-corruptin...

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm hoping there's a way to prevent this on any given Drupal website, but doubt that's possible with AVG hijacking the page before it loads and breaking it.

Indeed, hopefully AVG will address this immediately, but judging from when this thread started (less than a year ago), it's not a high priority.

...although i think it should be, because it can effectively break a website, and it only looks like it's the "website's fault."

...so how do we combat this? I assume this could happen for any Drupal version. Perhaps at the very least a module could be created to detect the injection of this script and warn users that the site may not function or even appear correctly unless AVG 2011 Link Scanner component (or others?) is disabled or AVG 2011 is uninstalled.

i posted something very similar in the official AVG forums. I can't remember totally, but I am pretty sure I got a generic response that they were working on the problems of link scanner...

i have switched to Avast, and haven't had any issues with any Drupal site since.

there are so many people that use AVG, it's a shame, because they could come to your site and think it's totally broken. I remember it literally slowed our site to a crawl. Not to mention, the weird things it did to this site, and I'm surprised no one has ever mentioned it before.

I hope they can fix it soon, or just get rid of that dumb link scanner. I remember tons of people were complaining about it, so it wasn't just exclusive to drupal sites.

They are supposed to have fixed it but I still a problem on a newly created site
http://www.mpmarble.gr dropdown menu does not work when AVG surfshield is on

here is their announcement about the fix
http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=113239

please post you specific problems so they might rethink their way of INJECTING the code into our sites
