Issue Summary
Hi,
If this can help someone;-)
I noticed while making a multilingual site that I couldn't update new modules.
A white screen came up when I started update php.
When I removed uc_localize the update php worked again.
With friendly regards, Johan

There is a bug in uc_localize, because it incorrectly uses a templating function also used by the Garland theme, which is the theme that gets activated when running update.
As a workaround, you can temporarily disable uc_localize, run update, and then re-enable the module.
Also, I don't believe this issue comes up if you update through the drush command line tool.
