Language support?

I've been searching this website but I couldn't find any useful info on language support... Finally, I found a file called 'locale.php' with a (first impression) quite difficult way of changing/translating.
Maintaining translations had to be simple so it became as easy as filling out forms on the administration page.
I agree with the idea, but I don't think this has been achieved yet.

in a stock drupal installation, you have to activate the locale.module in order to begin translating. docs are here ... perhaps you have ideas on how to improve this. or can point to another application which handles this better.

At first I was puzzled on how translation worked as well, torp, but it is quite simple and so far it is the best approach I've seen around.

First, as noted, you have to turn on the locale module. Then, follow the instructions on how to add a new language (you will have to edit Drupal's config and maybe create a new field in the db). Then start browsing the website. Drupal will "automatically" start to add text to the locales database. (the text has to actually be displayed using a translation function in the code, but all Drupal code is like that)

Now go to the Locales menu in the admin and start translating.

That being said... I am encountering problems with my translation module and since the link under forums saying "report your bugs here" sends you back to the homepage I am going to post it here and hope it gets noticed.

Problem: Sometimes Drupal has different capitalization for the same string. Ex.: "Username" vs "username". The database will have the first occurence it finds. So, in this example, I will enter the translation for "Username". When the public site needs "username" it looks in the database and can't find (that's good) but, somehow, will not add "username" to the list of untraslated work. (because it already has "Username")

If I go to the locale module and search for "username" the system will find nothing. The only workaround right now for me has been going directly to the database and adding "username".

I even installed 4.1 RC hoping this had been fixed but I still have the same problem...

Any ideas, forum people?

I'm also starting to translate own my own. It's pretty easy to do the translation, but there are a lot of strings, so it will take a while. So, I basically I have a request and a question:

request: Could someone share their translations to Spanish with me?

question: How do I export the translations? I haven't done any upgrades yet (I just learned about drupal this week) so I'm hoping I won't lose them when I do upgrade.
