The Drupal community has gotten large enough that community-focused groups are needed in order to help us take care of our own. LGBTQI Drupal, Drupalchix, Young Drupallers and Drupalgängers are all great examples. These aren't traditional working groups or regional user groups but they're essential for fostering the health of the community.
Drupal Fit is a movement to bring Drupal community members together and provide support for getting and staying fit. This movement started long ago at DrupalCons when community members met for early morning runs and group yoga, and the Drupal Fit group, on Drupal.org infrastructure at groups.drupal.org/fit, both acknowledges and promotes this movement.
Some of the goals of this group are:
- to provide a place for coordinating fitness-related events at Drupal conferences and in local user groups
- to encourage sharing of productivity boosting techniques and "life hacking" tips with members of the community
- to send a gentle but persistent message that our bodies are the only ones we have for the rest of our lives
- and to have fun!
We recently kicked off a community spotlight feature where we interview interesting people in the Drupal community who are dedicated to fitness in one way or another. Our first spotlight article features an interview with Denis Voitenko (scripthead) of Firm Idea, who is working on qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawai'i.
Another recent interview was with Dries Buytaert, the creator and project lead of Drupal, where he talks about his views of fitness and how he wants the Drupal community to be fit so that we make better open source software.
