We've seen a lot of feedback where the home page is visually overwhelming and text heavy... obv the page has moved on a bit since the prototype (and all is documented in issues).
One easy way to reduce clutter is to reduce redundant links. Here's a couple options, but would welcome others.
Option 1
a) Remove 2nd column under Develop with Drupal
* Drupal API
* Download Drupal
* Security Info
* Handbook
*Modules and Themes
* Explore Drupal modules and themes
b) Move Drupal API link to the footer
c) remove text under heading "Drupal is extensible, powerful, scalable, and flexible." ? (is it right for the home page?)
Option 1 would be quick to implement

Option 2
a) Remove Develop with Drupal section altogether and have the Sites Made with Drupal fill both columns (but this would significantly increase the length of the page)
b) Move the Current activity and This week stats beneath the map on the home page (or to another page altogether?).
Option 2 is more work but the current activity is relevant to the map.

Chip in. From my personal point, I do like option 1 just because form the perspective of a visitor the Front Page should be so clear to drive new and old visitors to the right section a easily as possible. Les text around is far much better.

drummI'm not happy with it yet, but here is something.

Richard Pattee commentedWe could bump a lot of information in to the footer.

lisarex commentedNeil, I really think we need to ditch the following from the top of the home page. (see my original suggestion)
* Drupal API
* Download Drupal
* Security Info
* Handbook
They are already in the footer, apart from Drupal API, and that would be easy to add.
And the first set of stats prob needs some sort of heading.

iaminawe commentedI like the revision posted in #4 and think that the color differentiation between the numbers and module & theme links is helpful.
The number of code & issue commits text feels a little awkward indented and could also be moved or removed to reduce visual clutter in that area.
I like your suggestions though

drummBut there isn't anywhere that groups together developer documentation. I think Handbook should be replaced with Developer Docs.

drummI went ahead and committed this. The links are a bit different and more unique. Will be up later today.

gkatsanos commentedI really do not think the page is busy - It's a three column layout - It's a big project.
I wouldn't want essential bits of information for a Drupalist such as the HANDBOOK or the API or the Download link disappearing or going to the footer, (!) and I definitely wouldn't want spending excessive time searching for that information in the inside pages.
Are we trying to go back to the previous DO version or what?
Please reconsider.
