Web apps are all the rage these days, and I was wondering what people thought about using Drupal to power a community site like Dribbble.

I listened to a podcast the other day where Dan Cederholm (the creator) said that the site was a Ruby on Rails app, and claimed that it took him and his developer about 9-12 months to have a good, working version of the site ready to launch. Looking at the functionality, I know that its something Drupal could handle almost out of the box - some extra fields, a few Views, user profiles and some jQuery.

The question I often wonder is: If you knew all the big hitters - RoR, Django and Drupal/PHP - which would you use? We've read at length about Drupal's scalability, so I don't think that would be a huge factor- and its certainly a factor for RoR as well. But with Drupal providing sooo much right out of the box, I wonder when it would be a good choice for apps like this one.

[ps: I know this is one of these unanswerable questions, but I wanted to ask anyway ].

The brief answer to your question is YES Drupal can power a Dribbble like website i've begun working on a clone of Dribbble and so far i can say i'm on 50% profiles and shots pages already done if you're interested i can show you some screens and maybe upload the site but i'd like to avoid any problems.

Did you ever finish this? I'm interested in using something like Dribbble without all the attitude. If I can't find something I was going to make something.

Most of functionalities were done but it goes against Dribbble's branding so there should be no online version.
