Is it possible to have recurring payments/subscriptions set up

The short answer is "not yet".

This is something we're looking at adding soon, and would be happy to prioritize given some support that would allow us to dedicate more time directly to that effort. Contact us off the issue queue if this is something you're interested in pursuing. The actual implementation will spread between Pay and Donate, as there would be some UI elements required for managing recurring subscriptions, for selecting recurring on forms, and also the payment method classes would have the appropriate methods added so each payment gateway could abstract their means of registering and de-registering recurring transactions.

For some gateways, the triggering of a recurring transaction takes place entirely on your gateway's side. So some implementations of Authorize.Net would register a recurring payment and Authorize.Net would run that transaction on the specified schedule until it was told to stop. Other implementations would require more management on the site level. Registering the customer's information (credit card number, etc) at the gateway provider, storing a key for accessing that information and the subscription specifics (amount, frequency) locally - and then triggering a transaction with that information as needed through cron.

We've put a bit of thought into this, but not a lot is committed to code just yet. If you can provide details on the gateway you're using (or willing to use) and what you're looking to be able to do we can probably get a bit more specific.

We also do have limited funding for implementing Authorize.Net CIM. This could be extended to provide recurring options using the second scenario described above, but the structure and UI for storing, managing and triggering the transactions would still need to be fleshed out.

Hope this helps clarify a bit. If you want a simple solution, this will (eventually!) be it - we just need a bit of support to finish fleshing stuff out.

Also like to add my support for recurring payments - this time through the realex payment gateway, as that's based here in the UK so my preffered gateway. They say on their website they support recurring payments, but I'm not sure whether this is on their side or ours or a bit of both.

I see the problem though - each payment provider can potentially handle recurring payments in a different way - do you think its worth adding some standard UI elements and hooks to the donate module, and then build the recurring functionality in to the payment gateway modules? If it was standardised it would mean it wouldnt need to be re-done for each gateway. (I think that's what you mentioned in the first post?)

The main hangup on this has been outside funding/support for this work, which we'd *really* like to do! The good news is that one of our current clients is now reviewing a proposal to add recurring functionality, so odds are increasing.

I'm interested in the ability to have recurring payments also, especially in the Drupal 7 version of the Donate, Pay API & Authorize.net modules. I'm still learning Drupal, so I'm not comfortable in taking a shot at helping with anything.
