The font in the prototype is an Arial, in the beta it's Lucida Grande. (and definitely uglier IMHO.)

Prototype's font stack:
font-family: 'lucida Grande', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;

Our font stack:
font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Lucida, Arial, sans-serif;

Lucida Grande is generally only on Macs, Lucida Sans Unicode only on Windows. Everything I've seen shows they are very similar. So the prototype was intentionally Lucida Grande, but didn't have the full set of alternatives.

One of the main concerns has been the font size and readability, 12pt Arial is quite small. This was brought up at #509050: Reconsider base font size (PLEASE!) and #912936: Change font family. We reviewed these changes with the original designer.

The printscreens I attached are from Windows 7, with latest Chrome (same with latest Firefox).
It seems the font stack is what you say, but in the prototype the font displayed is Arial.

I believe aesthetically the Arial font is much closer to the new Drupal logo's font and I am definite that Arial is much more readable than Lucida.
