I have spent almost some month testing the Drupal Commons distribution and I find IMHO that for being advised and advertised as " ... social business software solution for organizations." in the profile page, there are real easy to configure permissions settings for Role and also for Group Admin/manager.
It's out of doubt that any organization wanting to use Drupal Commons for implementing social business community sites will need to create more administrative and management roles for achieving their organisation and contribution goals.
So because AFAIK the Taxonomy_Access module is far the most advanced solution for fain grain public / restricted / private permission in any role and module feature access permission I pledge for integrate this module in Drupal Commons.
I have already tested it intensively and it works as aspected.
What is your opinion?

I think taxonomy access is a bit more complicated than you think it might be for the average site owner - and maybe more complication that I prefer to include in the distro. So I'm going to elect to exclude it.
However, you do make a good case for why somebody might want this module on a given site. I encourage you write a wiki page on commons.acquia.com that describes why you would want this module, what it does, and how to install it & get it working on a Commons site! :-)
