Given how much work and thought went into http://drupal.org/start it's kind of a shame that http://drupal.org/about includes "Getting Started" as a relatively tiny header which doesn't even link to http://drupal.org/start. The giant green download button takes you off to the news announcement about the current core release (which is usually full of information about security vulnerabilities we fixed, which might be disorienting for people on their 3rd click into Drupal). Seems like it'd be nice to link to http://drupal.org/download somewhere down in this bottom region when people are actually trying to get Drupal.
This text is actually misleading/wrong:
"The Drupal Core is a collection of files that you must download in order to get started with Drupal."
You can also download a distribution (which includes core, plus lots of other stuff you probably need) in 1 step. We don't want to train people to automatically *just* download core -- in many cases, downloading a distro would be way better for them. Given how this chunk of /about is setup, there's nothing pointing new users to the parts of the site that might steer people towards a distro that suits their needs (/start or /download).
Also, the "Who's Using Drupal" header (or at least something in that section) should probably link to http://drupal.org/cases (although /cases and this section of /about are sort of duplicating each other) -- maybe that should be a separate issue so this one can focus on the "Getting Started" section of /about...

lisarex commentedDarn good points. Just now catching up to these old issues. I'm going tackle this About page. See also #1210094: Content Audit for About Drupal (/about) landing page.
Moving project as well

lisarex commentedHere's a screenshot from my localdev that addresses many of the problems identified above, plus removes the features listing per the content audit, and updates several links and copy, as well as emphasises Getting Started instead of Security.
Getting Started now has:
Get Started with Drupal gives an overview of working with Drupal, and then you can download a pre-built Drupal distribution or one of the recommended releases for Drupal 6 and Drupal 7.
I want to iterate on this page, so it doesn't include *everything* identified in #1210094: Content Audit for About Drupal (/about) landing page. :)

lisarex commentedI committed and pushed, since there's just a lot to do on this page. dww or drumm can do a quick technical review though.

lisarex commentedOK, marking as fixed as this got deployed. I have additional improvements (e.g. #1210094: Content Audit for About Drupal (/about) landing page and #947386: About book navigation inaccessible from /about page) to make and will be doing those next.
