mapping kit vs openlayers module

Dear,

It seems that mapping kit brings a few interesting features to openlayers. Can this module work as an add-on for the openlayers module or is it neccesary to use mapping kit as a standalone module without the use of the openlayers module.

I'm asking this because I'm used to openlayers.module but mapping kit seems to have some features that are not committed in the openlayers module.
