There are times when I need to sort pages differently than by date/by author. Is there a sort_order or rank property to take care of this?
In other words if we had the following:
rank title
100 Story On Red Widgets
200 Green Widget Documentary
300 Tales of Orange Widgets
then it could be changed as follows:
rank title
100 Story On Red Widgets
400 Green Widget Documentary
300 Tales of Orange Widgets
so that Green Widget Documenatry would appear last.
What is the best way to have full control over the sorting like this in Drupal?

There's a 'weight' patch
There's a patch that allows you to apply a 'weight' to each story, by adding a weight column to the node table, and appropriate UI widgets to edit weights and to move stories around in the administer content page. The stories are sorted by weight, and then by date.
I started with that patch, and then modified the sort order so that it was by day, then within the day by weight, then by alphabetical order. That way each day's news shows up in chronological order, but within the day the most important stories are on top.
