Views Gallery 6.x-2 is already a built as a feature, so unless you have something completely different in mind, perhaps you can just re-use KarenS's code, just changing content types to debut_image and/or debut_video.
Just an idea.

In D7, a gallery feature would best be a light integration of the excellent Media Gallery module.
