Bevan commentedI too am wondering if there has been any progress with a port of EmField to Drupal 7, or if Media is the preferred method of doing this. If so, what happens to the many Media-provider integration modules? Do they become dependent on Media module instead of EmField?

TimelessDomain commented#988954: Create upgrade path from Embedded Media Field (6.x) to Media module (7.x)
"For Drupal 7, Embedded Media Field's functionality is being replaced by the Media Module, which takes advantage of Drupal's new PHP stream wrapper support, however there currently is no upgrade path to move from Emfield to Media. "

lynnmart881 commentedThe Media module as replacement for EmField would be great if it actually worked. It's completely un-useable in it's current state.
alex ua commentedThere is no port for emfield planned at this time, as Media is the preferred solution going forward. I'll leave this open in case someone else wants to go ahead and do a straight port of emfield (which we'd definitely consider committing to the project), otherwise Media module is the solution (though it still needs work).

alex ua commentedThis is postponed in favor of #988954: Create upgrade path from Embedded Media Field (6.x) to Media module (7.x). If anyone else wants to create a straight upgrade to D7, I think we'd be fine with making you a committer to this project for that purpose, but unless someone steps up this is "Won't Fix"

BenPoole commentedAn upgrade path would be nice, but isn't it more important to get D7's Media module working? Like lynnmart881 said above (comment #10). The Media module is missing most of the media integrations that EmField has for D6, and seems like it's in a mostly theoretical state. Please correct me (and provide links) if that is incorrect.
aathewise commentedI feel like the media module is based more towards administrators posting... which is fine. With the emfield module it's geared towards anyone posting. Which is perfect for this site.
TimelessDomain commentedMedia currently has a problem with being uninstalled. This has messed up a few of my websites. If Media does not get this - #970696: Disabling and re-enabling media module throws exceptions, leaves website in unusable state. - figured out soon, then we should consider porting EmField to D7 (even though EmField is supposed to be superseded by Media).
keesee commented+1. Although I am sure that Media will get their isses resolved... I still think that embedded media player has more power as a field than an integration with Media. Reuse and alot of the bells and whistles are nice... But in my opinion the power in this module has been in simple field integration... easy to configure views and great integration with a number of other modules.
Can someone please give me the run down on what is gained by the dependence on Media? Isn't D7 after all a push to empower the entity (field)? It seems to me like this project might be moving away from that?

kreynen commentedThanks to effulgentsia and JacobSinghMedia, the beta4 release of Media now uses Entity http://drupal.org/commitlog/commit/698/9510e4c91d2a438430a32f7ccdcf9417d...
It's not like developers woke up one day and decided to make media management in Drupal more difficult. The exact opposite is more true. Several years ago developers who had been struggling with media in D6, started working on making media a first class citizen in D7.
http://www.advomatic.com/blogs/aaron-winborn/stream-wrappers-and-you
While there is still a lot of work to do on the core UI, the framework is a giant leap forward for Drupal. I've been porting several of the former emfield modules to D7. This is why...
Feeds is probably the best way to migrate nodes with emfields in D7 to their Media equivalent in D7, but I realize that workflow won't work in all cases. It would be great if there was a seamless upgrade, but it would also be great if all of former emfield modules had stable media equivalents.
raytiley and I just created the first release of media_archive yesterday. The more people testing, patching, and documenting the media_ modules, the sooner we'd be able to focus more resources on the upgrade path.

webchickIs #31 still an accurate picture of the current situation? Media module seems like it's picking up steam pretty well.
Tagging as a D7 stable release blocker, so that we could try and get some helping hands on these issues. This is one of the top 50 projects, and the general lack of porting there is making D7 look scarier than it actually is.
alex ua commented@webchick- I think that media is the solution, though the current state of the migration path is untested by a wider audience. If we could get a couple of folks to test out tim.plunkett's solution in #988954: Create upgrade path from Embedded Media Field (6.x) to Media module (7.x) I think we could close this as "won't fix".
aaron commentedactually, let's keep this open, re #31: i think this is a feasible approach, would assist with migration, and would be a viable and useful solution for many situations. i'll see if i can get to this after next week's media sprint.

hansrossel commentedI'm in favor of a lightweight solution like emfield was in D6. The media module is huge and of course a good idea and interesting solution in some cases, but if the media needs of your site are moderate then it is overkill.
Now that imagefield and filefield finally are in Drupal core and images and files are there out of the box, there should be a simple light one module solution like emfield to add a few embedded Youtube video's to your site.

jenlamptonhm.. depends on Media? The whole reason I wanted emfield was because I didn't need/want media on this site :/
Comment #55
alex ua commented@jenlampton- patches are welcome :P
Comment #56
aaron commented@jenlampton: The issue is that we are currently depending on media internet's ability to parse URL/embedded code into URI's. Their are at least 2 ways that I can see that we could resolve that issue, 1st we could move the media Internet module outside of the media package, and re-factor it to remove the dependency on the media module. I am hesitant to do that, at least without checking in with the rest of the media development team. Removing that dependency would not be trivial either.
The other solution that I can think of would be to duplicate the functionality in the embedded media field module, and provide a new hook for this. That would require fairly extensive modifications to many other modules providing for this functionality, including media YouTube, vimeo, Flickr, and other providers.
I am open to other solutions as well.
jenlamptonI'm still not sure I really understand why media internet is necessary, I may need to dig in a little deeper. (What was the solution for D6, before we had a media, or media internet to rely on?)
mototribe commentedI'm interested in this too, since I wasn't planning on using the media module any time soon
Comment #60
jenlamptonI've started a very simplified version of a youtube field module - it won't support other sources like emfield, or integrate with a file library like media, but it is a nice lightweight solution if all you need is a youtube field: http://drupal.org/project/youtube
I could use alpha testers!
tugis commentedIf all you want is a simple embed media field without media dependency, you should try this module (it currently supports youtube and vimeo):
http://drupal.org/project/video_embed_field
Comment #62
webadpro commented+1 for video_embed_field. Used it and works great :)
drupalvino commentedHi,
I am using drupal 7. video_embed_field working with only youtube url. I need working with embedded code.
Is there any option?
emfield module shows,
"Warning: Missing argument 1 for video_cck_menu() in video_cck_menu() (line 477 of /var/www/imprint/sites/all/modules/emfield/contrib/video_cck/video_cck.module)."
how to display videos using embedded code without using editors?
any idea?
plz its very urgent.
alberto56 commented@drupalvino this issue is about the existence of a D7 version of emfield. If you wish to report specific issues relating to emfield D7, you might have a better chance getting a response if you open a new issue.
Cheers,
Albert.
