Appartently the webmaster team could use some additional hands-on-deck. I'm raising my hand here to say 'I'm happy to help'.

Thanks.

Nothing personal, but it seems to me that this application is solely based on http://drupal.org/node/934594 etc.

Nothing personal taken, because this isn't personal. Michelle indicated that the webmaster volunteers needed help, I'm putting my $ where my mouth is, etc. I'd be happy to review and help out with the webmaster queue once in a while, though I can't promise a certain amount of time.

My concern is that you want to be a site maintainer simply to "get your way" - you removed an entire section of http://drupal.org/about/drupal-planet without getting any input from other webmasters, and doing that gets you a -1 from me.

alex ua’s picture

Interesting way to look at it. And here I thought "scratching your own itch" was what qualified someone as a maintainer. I guess helping to take the lead on the About Drupal section of the redesign, contributing documentation and case studies, helping out in other ways with the redesign, etc, isn't sufficient? You really want to question the "purity of my heart"?

silverwing’s picture

Questining the "Purity of your heart" - no. Ability to work as a team player - yes.

As mentioned elsewhere, those 'rules' were created over time by consensus. Coming in and removing them because you don't agree with them isn't how we work.

Sorry, Alex, but given your inflammatory behaviour in the past couple days, I don't really support your inclusion, either.

The webmasters team works by consensus-building, not steam-rolling.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to make matters worse, but I do feel slighted by the talk of purging Zivtech and Trellon for "violations". I know my fires burn hot, and I absolutely did feel personally insulted by seeing my company's name come in via such a discussion, but I have plenty of track record to show that I don't disrupt teams that I'm part of. I am stepping up because, as with the About Drupal section, I helped with, I care deeply about promoting/selling Drupal, and I feel that this decision was made in haste. As such, I would like to be involved in these types of decisions within the community in the future.

I'll mark as 'postponed' since all I can just as easily follow the webmaster issue queue and chime in as needed. If you all decide you want some help moderating spam, reviewing case studies, helping with URL aliases and other SEO issues, etc, then I'm happy to help.

webchick’s picture

I'm comfortable with "postponed." Now that you understand a bit more about the webmaster team processes, I'd love to see you take an active role in consensus building via responding constructively to webmasters issues, and we could re-visit this discussion again in a couple of months, once the current drama has blown over.

alex ua’s picture

Yup, sounds good. Honestly, in the end it's beneficial to get me "worked up" about something, because A) it proves (to me) that I care, and that means that B) I'll help out as much as is possible and take responsibility for those items I commit myself to helping out with.

In regards to working in groups, I don't really think this is a 'webmasters' vs. 'other working groups' thing, it's just that in this case, I (and other business owners) have a bigger stake in the outcome, as it is an important part of our marketing (and I do believe showing the growth of the ecosystem, especially growth amongst contributing companies, who ideally are the majority of companies in the planet feed). Anyway, the offer of help stands, and now that I'm subscribed to all posts in the queue I'll be sure to chime in early on in the discussions in the future.

I'm moving this back to needs review. Things have settled, tempers have mostly cooled, and I'm still here trying to help. So...?

I think two recent comments - #1005694-12: Promote the watchgmctv.com case study to front page and #995144-20: Promote IHeartAdoption.org on the front page - are overly combative and dramatic. In general webmasters should be calm and even tempered. Our general goal is to defuse conflicts, not create them.

While there are exceptions to this practice (e.g. killes is not known to be the most diplomatic person) it's still very important.

If you are still interested in becoming a webmaster (I assume so, based on all the work you've done, which is appreciated) then I hope you will find a way to express yourself and your opinions without making things personal and without expressing controversial opinions (e.g. your post on the watchgmctv.com case about "red necks" is pretty insulting not only to the fans of that site but also to the folks who have done performances of the Drupal Song and to the Kitten Killers).

alex ua’s picture

Interesting. So, the only way to get you to comment on this issue was to be combative, but that combativeness precludes you from accepting my application. Makes perfect sense, at least in the context in which it's being made (i.e. this issue queue).

I'll stop fighting to open up the content processes on d.o. when they're open. This isn't about me becoming a webmaster any more, it's about the closed and hostile issue queue that (unfortunately) controls both drupal's presentation to the outside world and (much more importantly) the "official" relationships between d.o. and the Drupal business community. At the moment, it is a process (more like a series of undocumented and capricious policies) run by unelected insiders, who are outright hostile to outsiders, and who seem to have little inclination to change. This is unacceptable in an open community and needs to change.

alex ua’s picture

BTW- what was combative with my first comment? Maybe it didn't come off as funny (that was how it was meant to come off- obviously I have failed at being funny yet again), but I can't see how it was combative, and that sentence certainly needed an edit (unless you agree that Country is the best music for all Americans), which has now been made. I would have made a suggested edit myself, but I don't have the ability to edit forum posts.

edit: oh, I see, the red neck comment. I went ahead and removed the words "red neck"- country is terrible no matter what the color of the singer's neck is.

That's the kind of comment why I'll not approve your application (and I guess nobody else will).

This type of comment seem to come out of habit. This is not helpful.

alex ua’s picture

@Gerhard- I really don't care at this point: the webmasters have let it be known that outsiders are not welcome, and as far as I can tell there's been maybe 1-2 new webmasters accepted over the past two years (judging by the issue queue- then again, the webmasters don't follow any rules they don't want to, so I have no doubt that more were added without issues). If you were treated as others are treated by you and others in this issue queue you'd probably consider leaving the community.

In regards to the comment you pointed to, you're being typically ridiculous. A webmaster reviewed that issue, all it actually needed (according to the actual rules made by... the webmasters) was another webmaster to add it to the list. I marked as RTBC to help in that vein (note, again, the 'C' at the end does not stand for Webmasters), and was attacked for helping. When I pointed out that the rules support my position, you comment here that you won't approve me. Which is EXACTLY how the "rules" here are applied- in a capricious manor that helps the webmasters ignore valid requests, and keeps outsiders from entering your "temple".

If your goal is to keep out outsiders, get as little done towards improving d.o., and make sure 'newbies' feel as unwelcome as possible, then you are succeeding. Letting "newbies" like me help out would certainly be disruptive- I mean, things might even get taken care of, and people might feel a bit less assaulted when they have the misfortune of stumbling onto this issue queue- as I did when I was threatened with a purge. Yes, I am bringing that up again, since I'm now 100% certain that was more than a simple misunderstanding of the term (go ahead, figure out a way to complete the deed- the pure of heart must not be questioned by the rabbel!).
