I can't figure out how to set highlight areas. The JFK example has this (shot to T.O.D.). Am I missing something in the views, or is that functionality not implemented in the drupal module?

This is not implemented in the Drupal Module. but it could be a feature request for the future.

I'd love to see this feature too. (Or if anyone's integrated filtering with a Timeline-module timeline, I'd love to hear how.)
