After my clients have a valid Ogone payment and they leave without returning to the webshop, those orders keep having the 'in checkout' status instead of 'payment pending' or 'completed'.

is this the correct functionality of Ogone?

You need to enable the IPN functionality at Ogone's side.
Let it point to http://your_website_url/cart/ogone_return_ok
