Translation project for Malay http://localize.drupal.org/translate/languages/ms is not following ISO naming standard for languages http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php . I have raised the issue with the group manager http://localize.drupal.org/node/1889 but have been turned down on political note. Due to the issue many potential Malay contributors will shy away from the group and the Malay translation will not be able to complete.

Malaysia is a country. Malay is a language spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and many other countries in the world. Limiting the language to 'Bahasa Malaysia' will limit the potential contributors only from Malaysia. Since 'Bahasa Malaysia' is already taking the 'MS' code then what code are we going to use for 'Malay'?

This indeed sounds like a political issue. Localize.drupal.org (and Drupal) attempts to follow the IANA registry. See http://www.w3.org/International/articles/language-tags/. 'ms' is listed as a macrolanguage there and invidual languages have their own codes. Further languages can be submitted and added under their own codes to localize.drupal.org as well. Bahasa Malaysia is not even listed in the registry. The Malay (language itself, not macrolanguage) uses zlm in the registry.

It is very hard for us to modify existing language codes because several major versions of Drupal core, translation update processes, etc. all rely on these matching. So we cannot really modify a code once set up. That is part of why we try to take so much care setting them up (which some people consider holding up progress).

We just need to change the naming convention for 'ms' from Bahasa Malaysia into Bahasa Melayu or Malay instead.

Indeed, Bahasa Malaysia would be correctly said Bahasa Melayu, but the language code for that is actually zsm and not ms, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_Malay. We have ms which has a wider understanding of Malay. It should just be called Malay. Sitting with @akmalfikri discussing this. I can fix this on localize, but a core issue is needed too.

Actually https://localize.drupal.org/translate/languages/ms already says Malay language team, so only need to fix the langcode name.
