I'm not sure if my site is just misbehaving, but I can get #hashtags and @usernames to work on initial statuses, but comments on statuses do not seem to support these 2 features. Is that the way this module is supposed to work?

This is going to require a fundamental rewrite of the Tags submodule, so postponing it at least until after 3.0-RC1.
