Test, Play and Test More
My advice is to set up a sandbox installation of Drupal and play around there. Test, play, and re-test modules and their functionality.
I think the hardest part with Drupal is figuring out how best to deploy its myriad of features. I know that my first Drupal site does not do things as efficiently as my latest Drupal site. So, in this area, better things only come with experience--but that is where testing and playing around with it come in. The more you experiment, the better.
