My apologies in advance if this has already been addressed in the upcoming release.

It would be nice if I could enter my own value for sending interval without having to edit the simplenews_scheduler.module file.

The option of a simple text field to enter a given number of seconds would be great. I imagine it having some text like,
"Enter your own time between intervals in seconds [_____] (86400 seconds = 1 day)"

Probably comes under #984770: Use a better backend for triggering events.
