FileField + path + attach + rules issue

Not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place, but here goes nothing.
I have filefield, filedfield_path, file attach and ruies all functioning. I am using the "on node create" event for a couple of rules. The condition of each is checking the custom content type for a correct value. The action(s) use the "Populate a Field" (CCK) option and I am using the "attach from server" option here. The list of available files, in the file list drop down, is correct. When I select the appropriate file, then click "Attach", the wheel spins and then the "File Attachment" group box disappears and no attachment is made. Like nothing ever happened.
I've searched the forums and google and can't find a similar issue anywhere.
Help is urgently requested.
