I have just done some theming work on a project where I used a super kewl progress bar http://skunkworks.ivanvanderbyl.com/.

Its available for download at https://github.com/ivanvanderbyl/ui-progress-bar.git

Hope the new look can work for you its nice and slick, and its degradable so IE will look something similar to what you currently have.
