I am looking to see if drupal can be used as a front to an online store.
It would need to have products listed with price, a shopping cart, as well as an easy way to monitor inventory of products.
Has this been done, and can it be done?

Yes it has been done, ubercart is one such solution.

As others have said, Drupal is great at ecommerce. However, if you are looking to hear from consultants who could help you with that, you should edit your profile and turn on your personal contact form so that people can reach you.
