COD needs a great, simple base theme that works out-of-the box. We're creating this great site with lots of built-in valuable features such as 'add to schedule', the awesome session grid, and context-sensitive calls to action (ie. "Register now"), but we really need a base theme that highlights these features so they are more visible/ successful, as well as make COD stand out from the crowd.

If there was some Skinr integration, that's even better, because people would be able customize without a ton of theming (but that's perhaps a ways off).

I just noticed that there is a theme at http://drupal.org/project/conference_organizing

We should use the namespace though the code is probably not as valuable any more.

Pardon me!

The link I posted in comment #1 is to a module, not a theme. The theme is at http://drupal.org/project/cod_organizing

I'm working with a theme shop through LA Drupal on this. I hope to announce something in the next few weeks.

Yep, GVS is in the loop on that as well. If you haven't already, please see and feel free to provide feedback on #1004698: Proposed COD information architecture :).

Sheena from TNT is working on this. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/142619

Having talked with Sheena a bit, we're beginning work on a minimal responsive base theme for DIY themers using COD. Following the results of the poll Ezra linked to in #6, "Starting from scratch with a custom design" seems to be the biggest desire. Sheena has already been tackling the other major request "Making slight changes to the default theme":

Right now we're taking the standard sort of "more is more" generic approach to building the COD default theme - something that is easy for newcomers to extend and customize, but is a bit bulky and ugly from a HTML/CSS perspective.

My focus has been on using a COD install during actual conference time. We can tackle mobile registration and stuff later. My initial thoughts for a base theme:

  • Responsive. No need to make companion apps for each conference.
  • Above all, needs to render the calendar very clearly for mobile users.
  • Needs to be light on graphics, or at least implement responsive image techniques since wi-fi can be finicky at events.
  • At the request of coltrane: Needs kittens

That sounds great, rupl.

On another note, Sheena provided some COD for the COD base theme. She's going to be AFK for the next week or so, and said there might be some issues with Superfish, but here's some actual code!

I'd like to examine this and git this into the upcoming COD beta where it can get some more broad review.

Fantastic, I'll move over to that issue queue and contribute there. Thanks, Ezra!
