I'm running Drupal 4.7.4 with a customized Meta theme ( http://drupal.org/node/43376)
Traffic hit a peak early in the year - the december 2005 figures were 55K unique visitors and 396k
pages served. Traffic has generally dropped since then, I'm not sure about the exact figures, but it's very likely because i've almost entirely stopped updating the site. (busy!)
Anyhow - my (shared hosting) provider has cut me of at least 7 times in the last 6 months, and increasingly frequent intervals. Their reason is always that my site has exceeded the CPU usage allowance (which has been quoted at 2%). What I don't understand is how this could happen when user figures are declining.
The first time it happened, I upgraded to Durpal 4.7.1 (i think) and a new meta theme. Since then, I've upgraded to the latest drupal - but I haven't changed/upgraded the theme, although frankly I should, I think it isn't all that pretty :| (totally my bad - nothing to do with meta).
The most recent time I was cut off, I switched on the throttle and removed some modules - but that lasted all of 2 weeks this time.
What's up with that!?!? (and usage figures are definitely down - after my service was restored the last time, I went to look at awstats, and january/feb was the peak.)
Is anyone else having a problem similar to this? Could the theme be the problem? Any comments you might have will be appreciated.

when you disabled the
when you disabled the modules, did you also delete their folders ?
when you first set up your site, did you alter the memory limit in any way? typically done after a visit to the admin/modules page produces a blank screen ?
Have any server specific stats ? how much ram are they using ? where are your 2% being used? mysql?
I'd have a few more questions for my host with regards to this. Especially considering all was well, and now your getting bumped with less traffic. how you investigated where the traffic is coming from ? and how much of it coming at the time its being shut off ? apache logs ?

I have very little information, actually - they don't tell me when it's down or why it's down - i just notice that it's down and send them an e-mail.
I've just written them a mail to ask about it - their last comment was "I suggest ... you to optimize scripts and remove all un-needed parts of code from it. Those scripts are usually very badly written and are NOT intended for shared servers if they have more than dozen visitors."
I don't really want to argue that point - I agree that the strangest thing is that it never used to happen.
Perhaps it's time to upgrade to drupal 5.0 beta.

or perhaps its time to find a new host, that is drupal friendly. the canned answer about drupal being badly written and not intended for shared servers, is a kick in the teeth. Basically your host is telling you they arent drupal friendly.
