THIS PAGE IS OBSOLETE!!! Please refer to the official Drupal Conference Portland 2005 page

OSCON is in Portland, Oregon, USA 1-5 August 2005. I am organizing the Drupal related BOFs and events. If anybody wants to help, that would be great, just let me know! E-mail roland AT bryght.com or skype:rtanglao.

This post is an attempt to summarize the current thoughts and to get some discussion and feedback. Click on "read more" for the full details.

Here are the BOFs that have been discussed:

  • Drupal Developers
  • Drupal Users
  • CivicSpace
  • Perhaps a Usability BOF (discuss Chris Messina's node form enhancement ideas for example)
  • Perhaps a DrupalEd BOF
  • Drupal.org infrastructure

Since Dries is not available until the end of July, we have planned not to start the BOFs until the 2nd or 3rd.

Other events:

  • Trip afterwards to Cannon Beach and environs (great hikes according to Dries's research)
  • Trip to amazing Pinot Noir vineyards nearby
  • Sampling Portland's famous micro-brews (my kind of event)

Anybody else have any ideas?

Here are the people who are coming (taken from http://dev.bryght.com/t/wiki/Oscon2005):

  • Boris Mann
  • Roland Tanglao
  • Richard Eriksson
  • James Walker
  • Adrian Rossouw
  • Kris Krug
  • Dries Buytaert
  • Moshe Weitzman
  • Neil Drumm
  • Chris Messina
  • Kieran Lal
  • Other CivicSpace people (may include Ankur Rishi, Zack Rosen, Andrew Hoppin)

I'm webmaster for the biggest University in Oregon, Portland State University, and a strong supporter/user of Drupal.

I'd be happy to help suggest/organize/attend Drupal-oriented events in Portland during the conference.

Most especially, I invite any other PDX Drupal users to get in touch...I may have some work for you ;)

looking forward to working with you, any feedback or suggestions (can u tell i have never done this before?) would be great!
when would u be available to skype or IM about this for say 30 minutes? let me know via email to roland AT bryght.com

Did we just 'discuss' the BOFs or did we fill out applications too? What is the deadline? When is the notification of acceptance?

And here I just moved to Colorado in April. *hmph*

It's 600 miles for me :S. In any case, I could not attend the conference myself, but depending on peoples schedules and when they are leaving it would probably be posible to come up Friday for me.

The OSCON conference is an excuse to have some Drupal BoFs at the same time. Ideally, we'd like to make those available to as many people as possible, regardless of their actual attendance at OSCON.

If you come to Portland....we want to meet with you!

At Portland State University with the help of Nate Angell because there are lots of people in your situation. If you can help or have suggestions, please contact me or leave a comment here.

Well, Beaverton technically. I would like to see about attending and start getting active in the on-line community!

based on what i am hearing here and other places it looks like we should have at least one BOF outside of OSCON (maybe on Friday the 5th and maybe at Portland State University with Nate's help? does any other date make sense?)
And we will definitely organize a Drupal micro brew pub crawl!

Dries’s picture

I just booked my plane! I'll arrive on Monday, August 1 (evening) and I'll return home on Monday, August 8. This means I'll be at OSCON from August 2 to August 5, and that we can do some sightseeing on Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7.

Roland Tanglao@bryght.com’s picture

Unless I hear otherwise by Sunday at noon pacific, I will submit the following to O'Reilly as BOFs:
i) commercializing Drupal aka Vendor meet and greet (Bryght, CivicSpaceLabs, Drupal consultants, etc.)
ii) online communities with Drupal (BlufftonToday, PhillyFuture, Bayosphere, UrbanVancouver, ourmedia) as well as using Drupal for open source community management http://ejabberd.jabber.ru/, http://www.rssowl.org, etc
iii) FOSS CMS BOF (suggested by Dries) to compare notes and see how we (Plone, Mambo, Drupal, etc.) can conquer the world collectively !!

And for those who will be in Portland August 1-5 but can't afford OSCON,
Steve Peck and I brainstormed this Thursday night over Skype (since it
seemed like there will be just as many people going to Portland who
can't afford OSCON but who are interested in Drupal):
* Mini Drupal -con - NON OSCON BOFs
- Friday until Sun
- User BOF Friday night say 7p.m. and then micro brew
pub crawl
- Sat.
- Brunch near Portland State University
- 10 minute presentation by Dries
- 5 minute lightning talks- e.g. Kieran on Drupal usability, Zack on CivicSpace, Boris on Bryght, Charlie Lowe on new drupal Docs, Matt on ecommerce, John Van Dyck on CCK
- then break out into 2 rooms for 2 BOFs (topics to be
decided perhaps usability and docs )

I am from Portland and am a Drupal-fanatic. I think your non-OSCON plans sound awesome and I know a 2-3 other people who will want to come too. Please just let us know exactly where to be and when. If you have any questions about Portland, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Please fill out the following survey if you are going to be in Portland during the time of OSCON 2005, August 1-5. We will use it to plan the Drupal events at OSCON for those attending OSCON and for those who can't afford it, the non OSCON Drupal events.

Portland is a Drupal town, all right. right at the top, with the new Mayor, Tom Potter.

as a campaign employee, I set up Potter's campaign site for the May 2004 Primary with the Dean For America derivative. it was easy to set up, and ran flawlessly all the way through the November General election. the site drove a big part of the grassroots success of the campaign.

late in the Primary, I left Potter's campaign to set up a Political Action Committee site, GoPotterGo!-PAC, using pure Drupal. over 65% of the money raised by the Committee came via the website. the flexibility of Drupal helped enormously with high-speed guerrilla PR, which was exceedingly effective.

thought you'd like to know.

cheers,

or the non OSCON but in Portland at the same time events?

and if so, would be willing to help as a Portland "person on the ground"?

I set up this drupal site to help us all plan drupal-related events in and around OSCON during early August, 2005:
http://mediapede.org/projects/oscon2005/

Please visit the site, fill out the events preferences survey, and help us organize during OSCON.

Dries weighed in on what drupal events he'd like to see happen in Portland around OSCON 2005...so now it's your turn!

Hey all - I live here in Portland. I'm a huge Drupal fan - and also a past member of Portland's wireless network group (www.personaltelco.net). We have TONs of free wireless access all over Portland, and TONS of Microbreweries (I think to most of any town in the WORLD).

I'd be happy to help provide information or resources that I have access to for out of towners. I'm hoping to attend a lot of the OSCon conferences - particularly the Drupal stuff. However, I have a "real job" that doesn't necessarily allow me this freedom.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the local area. I may be able to arrange accomodations with locals for out of towners - via the Personal Telco group ... geeks helping geeks...

Do the OSCon BOFs require a payed registration? It says on the registration site that walkins only get access to the exhibit hall

Anyone have tips for doing conventions on the cheap?

I just moved to portland btw. I've done alot of drupal stuff, and I'm excited to meet other drupal devs.

I plan on coming to attend mini Drupal Con. Please let me know when and where is it. Also, is there any formality that I need to complete to attend this?

My work is sending me down (and paying) for Monday-Thursday, but they want us to come back and work one day on Friday! So I won't be around the following weekend. :-(
