Eggther is an extension to Node access user reference.

Use case

Guess you have a company with some divisions. Each division has their own news and events and some people should be allowed to create and edit this content.
User #1 is allowed to create and edit events (by role) but should do this only for division #1.
User #2 is allowed to create and edit events for division #1 and #2.
Both user should not be able to edit the division itself.

By using Node access user reference you can assign the users to the division node. With Eggther you are now able to deny update permission for the division node so this is simply a container for the permissions.

The combination of Eggther, Node access user reference and Node Access Auto Reference creates a permission system similar to Organic groups.
