Flexiforum
Got some time to work on this module now. if you guys want some feature requests place it as issue i will take care of those. drupal6 porting is going on.. if you guys need any alternatives see below.
If you require forum posts to be nodes, not comments, another option (with a D6 -dev version and currently maintained) might be Nodeforum, which works with Nodecomments like Flexiforum.

Flexiforum is an alternative to the forum module. It works with Node Comments and the BBCode filter module. It also features a "Reply with quote" option and a forum-specific search.
If you have an example of Flexiforum "in the wild", please let me know.
