What you'll need:

1. Drupal latest version
2. Wamp5 grab it from http://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php

Steps:

1. Install Wamp

2. unzip Drupal into your wamp's www folder. Rename drupal-5.1 directory to drupal (eg C:\wamp\www\drupal)

3. Run WAMP, you should get a wamp icon in your system tray. You need the dial to be white to continue. Note if you run Skype, it interferes with WAMP and so you have to start WAMP without Skype running (and then start Skype if you need it)

4. open a browser window and go to http://localhost/

5. press to phpmyadmin link
in field "create new database" enter drupaldb (it's going to be a database name for this installation).
Press Create.

6. now open http://localhost/drupal
follow the on screen prompts to install drupal.

On screen prompts and what to enter in the boxes:

Database type: mysql
Database name: drupaldb
Database username: root
Database password: (don't put anything in this box)

Save configuration.

7. Create the first account

Username: admin
Enter your email
Then press create

Probably you will get this message:

"warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and
"smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in C:\wamp\www\drupal\includes\common.inc on line 1970."

It's OK. Just enter and confirm password. As this is only for testing locally I'd suggest setting the password to:

admin (or something like that)

Save information.

Press link Home.

Visit administration section, it will say "One or more problems were detected with your Drupal installation. Check the
status report for more information."

Go to status report.

If File system marked as red, press File system link. Press save configuration.
Press Administer link.
Again status report.

If Cron maintenance is red, press run cron manually. Color should change to green.

Now remaining problem is GD library:
Left click on Wamp icon in tray. Choose: PHP Settings -> PHP extensions -> click php_gd2

Refresh your webpage. Color is green everywhere.

Oppa!!! You now have a local copy of Drupal for testing purposes :)

Save address http://localhost/drupal/ to your favorites. You must have running wampserver in order to access your
drupal webpage.

Hi,
I couldn't find how to do clean urls with WAMPserver...

ray_223’s picture

Hi Amitaibu,

Enable mod_rewrite in Apache.

I did this by "Config files" -> httpd.conf and removing the "#" from the "LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so" config entry.

You may also be able to enable it by "Apache Modules" -> "rewrite_module" (bit I haven't tried this method).

It took me a while to figure this out, so I thought I'd share. If you are using aliases, don't forget to add this line to your Drupal .htaccess, right after "RewriteEngine on":

RewriteBase /your_alias_name_for_your_drupal_install

Has anyone using this version yet and experienced any issues with it and installing latest version of Drupal 6.x? First install wampserver, then Drupal, correct? Also, I'm installing it on windows 2003..any issues with that platform?

I also downloaded the latest apps seperately but I guess wampserver has them all built in - its about 20mb!

I'm not so hot on the wamp install. Its a good way to get started, but it imposes some things on you that will come back to get you if you need to deploy in a non-WAMP environment. You really need to understand the configuration differences between WAMP and a standard PHP install.

I have a problem with the performance of the Wampserver2c (and previous versions) running Drupal.
It uses A LONG time to save eg. when I have selected 3-4 moduels at once, or choosing antoher theme.
Just showing "Waiting for localhost" bottom left for about 3-4 minutes, before finishing a module-save. It works, but it's like I actually can go get me a cup of tea while waiting. Very annoying. Especially when testing out modules/themes. Slow all over the whole local site, actually!

Have tried ApacheTriads and Easywamp, same problem.

Is it the network (100 Mbit ethernet w/ a ProLink DSL-router for Internet), apache (2.2.8), mysql (5.51b) or php(5.2.6)??
Tried to install Zend Optimizer, but it won't install, gives me a SP3 message. I have Win XP w/SP3 installed. But the problem was there a half year ago w/o the SP3...

How can I find out what's going on?
Using a DELL Inspiron 500m w/2 Gbyte RAM and 'bout 35 Gigg empty diskspace.

Thanks for ANY type of tips of what to do/where to go to find updated info on tuning W.A.M.P systems.

Hi,

I thought it was only me.

I am getting the same problems as you.

Loading the page running drupal takes 10 secs just for the content.

Loading joomla takes 108ms.

It is getting frustrating.

varver’s picture

*Very* late reply ;-) but it might be useful for someone else.

For local installations (i.e. WampServer and stuff like that) try the following quck 'n' dirty trick: Change the type of the tables of Drupal's database, from InnoDB to MyISAM. Not all of them have to be changed to MyISAM actually, but it's easier this way - one big SQL query to change them all...

You can do that by hand in phpMyAdmin ('Operations' tab of each of the tables) or through the SQL tab, with a query like

ALTER TABLE `table1_name_goes_here` ENGINE = MYISAM;
ALTER TABLE `table2_name_goes_here` ENGINE = MYISAM;
etc...

Best Regards
varver

There are known issues on Windows with switching engines. Be very careful and make lots of backups.

I would hazard to guess, based on my testing, that the majority of all these issues (especially the modules admin page) are the result of your anti-virus program. Of the ones I've tried, Symantec's is by far the worst. AVG is reasonably fast in comparison (but still no Linux).

or the "Database Configuration" screen returns, empty.

Drupal 6.2, 6.1 and 5.12 have no problem being setup and communicating with my MySQL.

johnvsc’s picture

I had the exact same problem that you did... here is my work around:

for starters:

  • I am running a WAMP 2.0 stack on Vista (PHP5)
  • I have the rewrite_module enabled
  • only on my localhost installations: i created a privilege with the username:drupal and password:drupal
  • I am not installing a multisite
  1. I created a database called drupal6local
  2. I created a folder called d6local where my installation files were placed
  3. In my {www root}/d6one/sites/all/default/setting.php (i changed it from default.settings.php), I change these lines;
    $db_url = 'mysql://username:password@localhost/databasename';
    //$db_prefix = '';

    to:

    $db_url = 'mysql://drupal:drupal@localhost/drupal6local';
    //$db_prefix = '';
  4. Then, from the browser address bar, I navigated to http://localhost/d6local/install.php
  5. The installer ran and I got to the config page :)
    1. Also, there are some problems with running a D6 install (on Vista) with Update Notifications turned on: you can't access any Admin pages... so, for your local installs, leave this un checked and you should have no problems!

      Cheers

karnerblue’s picture

I also had this problem on my local WAMP server, and also on a Linux server. Although I can't really provide any insight as to why it didn't work, I found that installing with version 6.2 and then upgrading to the newest version seems to be a pretty easy solution that worked just fine for me. =)

Try increasing the PHP memory limit to 16mb in wamp/bin/apache/apache2.2.8/bin/php.ini (and also maybe through the .htaccess, if this doesn't work) and see how it goes.

Though, technically speaking, I am having the same problem with 6.6 and it didn't help. D6.6 is much slower, than Drupal 5.14 on a local machine for me.

fumbling’s picture

Thanks, do you where in the php.ini file I make that change? I see this snippet, but doubt that would be it:

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Resource Limits ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

max_execution_time = 30 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60	; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
;max_input_nesting_level = 64 ; Maximum input variable nesting level
memory_limit = 128M      ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB)
Yura Filimonov’s picture

memory_limit is it, but its 128M at WAMP, I guess.

Yura

fumbling’s picture

Thanks, yes I was surprised to see that it was already at 128M. Should I increase it?

Yura Filimonov’s picture

No, probably, the problem is with something else.

You can try clearing cookies (or use another browser to install the site), it was suggested as a solution to this error and worked for some.

Where can i find some any easy tutorial to trasfer the webpage from localhost to hosting provider?

Thanks a lot for your help!!

I had great trouble installing drupal 6 on wamp due to the presence of .htaccess file in the /drupal directory. I figured out a solution an thought to share it.

If you are trying to install drupal6 on wamp, and cant reach the installation page try adding an alias in your WAMP control panel in the system tray. Click on the wamp meter icon in systray: goto Apache->Alias directories -> Add an alias and click.

A command line pops up where you give the alias and address to the directory on your local machine. Its pretty simple and straight forward. Just in case it still might not work, try uncommenting this line "# RewriteBase /drupal" in .htaccess in /drupal directory.

If the clean urls options were disabled before, this will also make them work.

hey…

but i have a few of the problems listed below :

i get the message :

Notice: Undefined offset: 8192 in C:\wamp\www\drupal\drupal\includes\common.inc on line 612

Notice: Undefined offset: 8192 in C:\wamp\www\drupal\drupal\includes\common.inc on line 619

so i cant see any links like red “file system” and regarding cron maintenance.
it does say that ” your cron has not run “, but it follows to same status reports page as i told.

moreover,i clicked on the “php_gd2 ” properly.
all i wanted to know that by default there was a tick over there…but when i clicked,there is no tick,that means its not enabled,so what do we actually want to do,enable it or disable it.

desperately waiting for your reply.

I spent a whole day trying all of the options listed on this site.

Today I found this GREAT and easy solution on e-how. Took 5 minutes!

If you are running WAMP server for your Drupal 6.x installation then, the default configuration for the WAMP server doesn't not support the "Clean URLs". To enable the Clean URLs you need to change a setting in httpd.conf file. Go to wamp\bin\apache\apache2.2.8\conf folder and open the httpd.conf file with wordpad/notepad. Find the line #LoadModulerewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so in this file (in notepad press CTRL+F and write mod_rewrite and the line will appear. Omit the starting # (comment symbol) and save the file.

Now restart all the WAMP server services and go to Clean URLs option under Administrator--> Site Configuration in your Drupal installation. Click the Enable radio button and save configuration.

http://online-how-to.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-to-enable-clean-urls-in-dr...

Dp-Mtl’s picture

For Wampserver 2.0i with PHP 5.2.11, drupal 6.14

(1) find \wamp\bin\apache\Apache2.2.11\conf\httpd.conf
(2) Omited the starting # (uncomment) for the line #LoadModulerewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

Works very well

juliavdw’s picture

I've got WAMP running on Windows XP, and have gotten used to developing locally under custom aliases and porting my sites to the live server with little to no troubles.

My troubles appear when I attempt to update my local installation with the files and db backup from the live site:

I replace local files with the versions from the server
I change the settings.php to point to the local db and point to the local alias rather than the live base URL
I update the db with the most recent backup from the live site

I go to the local alias, which has been working like a charm this whole time, and it does not work- it shows the local site for about a second and then goes to 'www.alias.com', which is the live site, NOT the local one.

I thought it might be a permissions problem, but I've noticed that changing file permissions on my local drive does not seem to stick the way it would using, say, FileZilla on the remote site. Also results with Dreamweaver, my other way of changing permissions, are that it does not seem to work. I checked the file permissions of local aliases that ARE working, and I notice these too say '0', so maybe this is not the issue?

IS there a step that I am forgetting? It is frustrating to have my aliases break this way. I'd like to be able to update the sites locally so it goes faster and so that I don't boot off as many users taking the site offline.

Thank you for any words of wisdom!

I was trying to install drupal-6.16 with wamp 2.0i and it kept giving me

Although, I think the solution mentioned at

will solve the problem.

But, before I found this discussion, I tried installing drupal 5.1 with wamp5 (like mentioned in the tutorial above) (I had to google download sites for them both as they are older versions). The installation went fine for drupal 5.1 with wamp5.

I finally uninstalled wamp5 and tried the installing the latest drupal 6.16 with wampserver 2.0i using the solution mentioned at http://drupal.org/node/514334. I can't even fathom what to do next.

Thoughts?

Upon visiting http://localhost/, you should see the index page of wampserver. Under the 'Your Projects' title, you should see the folders which exist in the www directory (c:\wamp\www\ by default). This is the folder where you must uncompress the Drupal installation file - drupal-6.16.tar.gz at the time of writing this. You will be left with a 'drupal-6.16' folder. Feel free to rename it, but *before* proceeding with the installation.

Mokey’s picture

I tried this, and had to do a few extra things to make it work. Thought I'd try to save someone else the trouble I went through.

First, I needed to enable mod_rewrite in Apache (as someone else mentioned above)
Then, I needed to increase several limits in php.ini (also mentioned above, I think. I needed to increase maximum file size and some timeouts, I think).
Finally, I could get a clean install to work, but when I downloaded my site from my host, it wasn't working. Some of it worked, but I couldn't run update.php or get to admin/build/modules. Turns out one of the many modules I have installed was at fault. There was an error in the Apache error log, but it wasn't very helpful. I simply installed each of my modules on the clean drupal install until it broke. Once I deleted that module from my site, it worked as well.
