The Drupal Community Working Group recently posted a Code of Conduct template and playbook and is now looking into setting up some type of ongoing Code of Conduct contact training for Drupal event organizers.

We have had discussions internally, as well as at the Community Summit at DrupalCon Seattle, informal conversations that multiple Drupal Camps, and on the Drupal Event Organizer Slack workspace.

We are focusing on professional, online, live instructor training that helps Drupal event Code of Conduct contacts act as responsible "first responders" for any potential Code of Conduct issues that arise at Drupal events. It is our goal for people who complete the training to be awarded a badge/certificate as a "trained Code of Conduct contact" that Drupal event organizers can utilize to help make their events even more welcoming.

At the current time, we are in a conversation with a vendor who could provide monthly, online 4-hour workshops for somewhere between $200-$300 USD. The vendor's training focuses on "what do to when there is a Code of Conduct report/incident".

We are looking for feedback from the community in a number of areas:

  • Introductions to professional trainers who offer this type of training.
  • Cost
  • Time commitment
  • Training topics

Thanks in advance,
-mike

This could be valuable, but I can see some barriers to entry. For one, the cost may be prohibitive for a camp that is already struggling financially. Purely hyperbolic, but if it came down to sending an organizer or 2 to training or providing coffee for a day then that would be a hard decision.

Alternatively, offering incentives for people with the training to attend camps, such as a free ticket or similar, may be a way to offset that until a camp has the finances to do the training.

One consideration may be having a "Train the Trainer" session where regional representatives from user groups or camps attend the training or a more in-depth training that could help a new trainer deliver a strong, in-person training. Potentially this could happen with some support from either the DA or another sponsoring entity.

@dorficus,

Your points are well taken.

We understand that cost may be an issue, but we have heard from other event organizers in the community that professional training is essential - especially if it will result in some sort of badge/certificate. Your point about folks with the badge/certificate being incentivized to attend events is definitely something we're hoping will happen.

As far as your train-the-trainer thought, yes, this might be an option in the future. But, for now, we're focusing on finding a professional trainer to deliver something that is worthy of a badge/certificate. Once we select a vendor, if an event wants to invite that trainer to deliver the workshop at their event, that seems like a win for everybody.
