If the module would show a link for each supported search engine that takes to a help page that gives more details for the authentication process, this would help the user. The link must take to a page that is hosted on the search engine web site, of course.

I don't actually know if every search engine has a page that explains where to find the authentication data required, but it's worth to investigate on this, IMO.

Well, if I record them here, I know at least one place I can come get them :)

As this is purely a docs change, I don't see any reason it needs to wait for 7.x. Moving to 6.x with the intent that I'll probably supply a patch shortly myself (unless someone else jumps in).

This is a nice idea, but how often do sites move their documentation around? Does this add an extra maintenance burden?

Could we instead try having these listed on a docs page on d.org, and then refer to that from the module UI?

:) agreed joachim, and IMO this page will do fine until some other docs page is created, but it's probably not our job to document that.

Website documentation URLs are too ephemeral - for me today, only one of the above URLs works four years later - perhaps we'd have better luck linking to canned searches for eg "bing: How do I add a site to bing?"?

Ok I've created a main docs page for this module at https://drupal.org/node/2226361.

If someone wants to add the various engine links to that.... :)
