In our discussions around redesigning the content creation. Noyz proposed doing https://skitch.com/jeff.noyes/8kf3r/adobe-fireworks-cs5, the most notable part is that we would allow for configurable vertical tabs per content type.
We believe this makes a lot of sense, as we further tailor the content creation experience it often make sense to omit certain VT’s from display. Especially with contrib often adding many settings, that are hardly ever changed - we think it would be a good idea to be able to toggle the visibility of certain VT’s.

After playing around with D8-alpha, this was one of the first things we really missed from a usability point of view. Basically the UI for this could be located at admin/structure/types/manage/[content-type]/form-display
If this wouldn't make it to the final release, is there at least a way for contrib modules to alter the accordion configuration per content-type?
