Support for different calendars other that Gregorian (such as Jalali Calendar) is needed. There should be a way to add different calendars to this module because different locales may need a calendar other that the default Gregorian. Also date and time formats should be configurable for each locale and for each calendar!

This might be quite difficult. I'll mark it postponed but if someone knows how to do this, I'd look at a patch and see if it could be made possible.

I think if require hooks added to drupal base functions a module can take care of the rest, if you think it's possible and core developers accept the patch, i can contribute (running out of time for Drupal 6 :))

This is a big project that needs to be thought through. I started a wiki page in g.d.o. at http://groups.drupal.org/node/10607. Please add to that page anything that might be useful.

There is working going on elsewhere then, I won't be doing anything here.

I think it's better if we postponed this one while waiting for #1178342: Allow contributed modules to alter the format_date() function result. to happen. D8 is a long way still though :/

I seriously doubt this is going into core, even in D8. If/when it ever does, you can open a new issue.

If we can get that into core, we can do something with this...
