I can't install drupal commons on my aegir setup
so I create testcommons which is based on a standard drupal 7.16
so I downloaded drupal commons and copied the module folder contents to sites/all/modules of my standard testcommons setup
I then enabled the commons modules

I get the views and panels intact.

However there are no fields in the content types.

See the drupal-org.make and build-commons.make files for the list of required patches in Commons - I suspect you're missing:
