The README.txt file of the 7.x version of the SMTP module says:

3. Enable the SMTP Authentication Support module on the Administer -> Site
building -> Modules page.
4. Fill in required settings on the Administer -> Site configuration -> SMTP
Authentication Support page.

This should be:

3. Enable the SMTP Authentication Support module on the Administration -> Modules page.
4. Fill in required settings on the Administration -> Configuration -> System -> SMTP
Authentication Support page.

Also, this file contains the following:

Drupal will often use the email address entered into Administrator -> Site
configuration -> E-mail address as the from address.

This should be replaced with:

Drupal will often use the email address entered into Administratration -> Configuration -> Site
information -> E-mail address as the from address.
