the counter-plugin updates only after switching to source and back, and after pasting.
CK 4.1, Chrome 26.

As a workaround i use the plugin here:

(maybe the module's plugin could be removed / merged with this one?)

I have had the same issue, but can't get that Wordcount plugin to work. How did you sort it out?

Figured A solution out. It's here on github if anyone else is interested.

It's a much better plugin than the one that comes with the Drupal module in my opinion. There's a demo here:
