When new user signs up to site mailchimp automatically signs up to all newsletters

I have tried every configuration possible. 1 opt-in, the rest opt-out, all opt-out.
Basically any lists that are checked to be an option on the user registration get automatically signed up for that list no matter if they have selected none, one, or all of the available lists. Setting Double opt in automatically send emails to signup for all the lists.

I am using the latest Mailchimp 2.3 release, but the same issue was happening on the dev branch.

For now I have to remove the ability to subscribe at registration.

Any ideas?
