It would be nice to start d7 with a huge download counter like on http://wordpress.org/download/counter/ (congrats wp!)
this data can be semi live, most of these counters are. we could tail the accesslog of the d/l server once every 5 minutes and update the interval in between "fake" or if it possible make the page real. I dont know how well this would scale (caching, load etc) but could be big for prospects to see that Drupal is one of the top players.
Is this possible to make? should we?

anoopjohn CreditAttribution: anoopjohn commentedIt would be cool to present the download statistics for Drupal core and if possible other modules in Drupal as well. It wouldn't matter even if it is not real time but it would definitely help if we could show the numbers.
Sure we do have the statistics page but when competing with download statistics from other CMSes we should also show our download statistics.
Changing priority to normal.

AFAIK the problem is that we can't show real numbers on such a page, because we can't count number of downloads which happen via git.

anoopjohn CreditAttribution: anoopjohn commentedNow that drupal.org shows download counter on the project pages part of the issue here is taken care of.
Thinking of it - we should be able to count clones from git as well. Maybe there is a hook in git to allow for this. There is another ticket about this - #1353210: Track git clones in project download count. So perhaps this issue can be closed.

bertboerland CreditAttribution: bertboerland commentedactually, this idead though 4 years old might still be relevant for the release of D8...
Maybe the webmaster team or teh Drupal Assoc can look at this?
