I asked this question incorrectly yesterday so this is a clarification.

We are doing a Drupal site for a Police service. They want to post press releases (categorized as stories we're thinking?) and have members of the press receive automatic notification when a new press release is posted.

Members who log in for the forums or post news cannot receive the same notification.

Can anyone point us to modules that would provide the best solution for automating the process?

I have searched the database and there are many references to various notification options but no clear solutions for our situation.
