I cannot give you a specific answer because it depends on what you are specifically trying to achieve. However, I would say there are two things you can do:

  1. Use the classes on the body class, which change dramatically based on context
  2. Use the node classes

With more specifics I could give you a better answer.

Say under normal node content, they layout will be in 2 cols + main content

while in blog node type, I want to more space on main content and i would like the layout will be switched to 1 col + main content automatically.

But sadly it is Drupal 7 only at the moment. Check out the context module and see if it can do what you need it to.
