I'm excited to announce the formation of The Drupal Dojo, a community group dedicated to increasing the proficiency of apprentice and journeyman-level developers. The Dojo will work through the groups.drupal.org forums, and an IRC channel.

A middle-tier developer community is good for the project as a whole (#drupal intimidates a lot of people), and for enterprising individuals like myself, the idea of being able to build stronger relationships with up-and-coming developers makes obvious business sense. Seems like a classic win-win. I'll be posting on group progress as it evolves.

I've arbitrarily said we need five learners and at least one other "expert" to start out. If you'd like to participate, subscribe now and help me get the ball rolling.

I have just opened this issue:
Drupal 5.x: jQuery 1.1, with: jQuery 1.0 compatibility plugin
http://drupal.org/node/105574

John Resig hints at a more shallow learning curve for jQuery 1.1:
[jQuery] Blog » The Path to 1.1
Posted December 27th, 2006 by John Resig
http://jquery.com/blog/2006/12/27/the-path-to-11/
A lot of this is being done to help reduce the magnitude of methods that are included in the jQuery API. Having 70+ less entries will significantly reduce the size of the documentation, along with making it easier to maintain and read.

Could the inclusion of jQuery 1.1, with: jQuery 1.0 compatibility plugin,
in Drupal 5.x help matters related to the purpose of the new Drupal Dojo
by having a more shallow learning curve with jQuery 1.1?

Thank you,
Eddie Maddox

I just wanted to recommend this link for all the people who are a bit new to jquery and don't know the functions it provides.

http://visualjquery.com/index.xml

I use it whenever I write any jquery code because its a great reference and organizes all of the functions quite well. There are also sample codes w/ parameter descriptions for each function.

This is a great idea.

My only gripe is the term dojo itself. I knew it had something to do with martial arts, but had to lookup the exact meaning myself on Wikipedia.

For those from different countries, languages, and cultures, this term will be more obscure.

How about a more obvious name?

I don't happen to think that dojo is an obscure term, but that might just be because I'm a martial artist myself. However, I think it's accessible enough, considering you found it on Wikipedia, and the number of martial arts movies that have been produced.

And besides, alliteration is a good way to go.

The original title was "drupal apprentices," but that seemed too much like putting people in a "junior grade" box. Dojo sounded more fun, and when ChrisKennedy suggested the image from Kill Bill as an icon, well, I just had to go for it. Sorry if it creates any confusion!

"Drupal academy" or something neutral, yet descriptive.

Not condescending (like newbies), and not obscure (like dojo).

(I guess younglings is out too ...)

I kinda like the name "dojo." I think it does a good job conveying what I understand the intent of the project to be.

Besides, it couldn't hurt to expand the vocabularies of the people a little, right?

Hey Khalid

I actually believe there is some benefit to "obscurity", as it works as some sort of filter. With "academy" or "school" we would probably get too many hits of people expecting to be able to "drop a dollar" and be served, while the purpose is actually one of selfmotivated contribution.

I see where you are coming from. If it were a module, I would fully agree, but as we have here a project meant for enthusiast of all experience levels, organized to share and exchange experience, I don't see an "absolute" need for unmistakable clarity.

Just my 5c to the discussion

It is really great to stumble upon a site like this. I apreciate what all of you guys are doing and hopefully people would just build up and therefore the quality should also go up. And whats left for us future drupal wanna-be's is to learn and learn and learn some more.

Also, Khalid, just wanted to say that love the work you did with calculating the number of drupal sites online via google searches.

Hey Josh, good idea. I've just subscribed to the group and will do my best to help others and learn as much as I can. You never stop learning.

I agree that #drupal can be a little too much for many and will hang around #drupal-dojo these days, there are around 20 members chatting right now.

Cheers!

This group fits me perfectly, I have been slowly learning the inner workings of drupal for a few months now (on and off) and a group of API newbies working together might help us all learn it a little faster.
