For some posts you may want to hide the author info below the title of the node, but still diplay the publication date. I managed to do this by adding the following line to node.tpl.php in my theme folder.

<?php if ($date && (!$submitted)): ?><span class="submitted"><?php print $date; ?></span><?php endif; ?>

What this does is to display the date only for those content types for which the setting "Display post information" is deactivated on www.example.com/admin/build/themes/settings/global
