galleries are listed in mysite.com/galleries/gallery1 mysite.com/galleries/gallery2

how do i remove or change the "galleries" portion in the url?

As the path takes an argument (the gallery id), you will need an additional module for that: http://drupal.org/project/subpath_alias

If you install that with its dependencies, you can create an alias for "galleries".
