node/%node/take 'loses' its page layout

I'm breaking my head on this one. I haven't found any information or even mention of this issue but here goes:

I am using ctools pagemanager to create pages with a different layout for some sections of my site. I have used the system node_view page to set the layout based on the node type I am viewing. This does work for the quiz main page it does not work anymore; I am reverted back to the default layout.
I figure this has to do with the fact that the path node/%/take is already used, but since that is a child path to node/% I would assume (I know I shouldn't) it should still use the specific layout unless stated otherwise.
What is going wrong here? Or is there a way I can make taking quizzes behave?
